I “R” Aged. And A Romantic Question

I was going through a few things the other day and came across this poster design we were working on right before Sarah was diagnosed with cancer. Since we left the road shortly after that, we never did put this poster into use but it’s still fun to look back at it nine years later and see how very young we looked.

And come to think of it, I guess if we looked so young back then, that must mean that the last nine years have aged us?

Yep. I guess they have.

I am aged.

I feel aged.

I “R'” aged.

Well, you get the point.

Romantic Question

Since I know that many of us are still basking in the glow of this recent event . . .

nate and meg announcement

. . . I thought it would be fun to open up the floor to you all and hear how your marriage proposals came about. If you’re married, you have a proposal story to tell of some sort whether it be funny, sweet, poignant, awkward, or romantic. Or even romantically awkward!

I’ll start.

After Steve and I’d had just six dates in two years, both of our minds started turning pretty strongly toward marriage. Although we didn’t really talk about it outright, we were both dropping plenty of hints along the way.

On November 1, 1981, Steve took me on a day trip through the Blue Ridge mountains. That evening at sunset, we were parked at the top of Mt. Mitchell, which is the highest peak in the Eastern United States.

Great time for a proposal right? On a mountain top? At sunset?

Unfortunately, no proposal was forthcoming.

However.

The next night as we were sitting under a street lamp on a church parking lot and chatting about our relationship, I suddenly blurted out, “Well, what timetable are we on exactly?”

Steve leaned his head forward and rested it on the steering wheel for what seemed like a very long time. Then he sat up straight, looked at me and said, “Will you marry me?”

I didn’t have to think very long before responding in the happy affirmative.

We were married two months later.

Okay . . . it’s your turn!

A couple of you commented on how pretty Meagan’s nails were and asked if she had done them especially for possible proposal.

Although I don’t have the inside scoop on that, I would probably guess that the answer to that would be, “Yes!” Either that or Meagan just has gorgeous nails all the time. In which case, I am definitely jealous.

Jodi asked, Any idea of a date? This year, next year? Does Nathan want to find a job first? What is his major? Where will the wedding be? I am guessing Megan's Dad and Steve will officiate?

Jodi, I’m sure that during the time that Nathan and Meagan are here we’ll start talking about a lot all those questions. I’m fairly sure the wedding will be sometime this summer but beyond that I don’t know many answers to wedding questions.

As for Nathan’s major, it is something along the lines of Social Work/Counseling. I don’t remember the exact official title but that’s the general idea.

Mrs Pam asked if Snowy had gotten any mail yesterday.

Mrs. Pam, he sure did and he says to tell you that the healthy, homemade dog biscuits were especially delicious. He is now convinced that you are the most wonderful person ever!

A couple more Nathan & Meagan questions. You've mentiones a couple times that Meagan has already graduated from college. Is she older than Nathan (no need to reveal her age) or did she zoom through schol and graduate early? Is Meagan currently working (as a teacher)? Any idea where the lovely couple wants to live? Is graduate school on the horizon for either of them, or will they go straight to work?

Oh my goodness, my proposal story is just pitiful! My husband's parents had come to town, and they had gone with him, secretly, to help him pick out a ring. He planned out a most romantic proposal at a local restaurant, complete with a teddy bear carrying a basket with the ring in it.

His parents babysat his daughter for us, so we could go out to eat. I suspected somethingw was up, because he was very nervous and quiet during dinner, which is definitely UNlike him! But no proposal happened.

By the time dinner was over, it was pouring down rain outside, and my hair, dress, and makeup were ruined.

He suggested going to the local bookstore (where I dearly love to go). We parked, and as I put my hand on the door to get out and dash inside, he said, "Wait," and hands me the ring box and asks me to marry him.

No getting down on one knee. No flowers. No romantic surprise. Just sitting in a parking lot under the streetlights in the pouring rain. Not exactly the romantic proposal every girl dreams of, but it was pretty sweet anyway!

Of course, after I'd said yes and reached for the door again, he said, "Here, this is yours" and thrusted the poor, hapless, ringless teddy bear into my hands.

I still have that bear, and we were married four months after the proposal he chickened out of!

I love this post! My fiance and I have been engaged for 8 months, and get married on July 1st, four months from today! I am so excited for our life together!
He proposed to me on a lovely sunny day, I was having a break from study and he took me for a picnic at lunchtime. He surprised me by getting down on one knee and saying some very romantic things! I said yes of course, and we even received a round of applause from some very interested passers-by! The ring my fiance had chosen for me is very very similar to Meagan's - i love it.

Congratulations to your family, and especially to Nathan and Meagan - planning a wedding is such an exciting and special time!

My story is pretty pitiful too.

We were sitting in his basement watching hockey one night - it just happened to be exactly one week since I had determined he was never going to marry me and had decided to be OK with that. He had been a little quiet all evening. And then he said "Maybe we should look at houses this weekend."
I of course said "Um...what?"

His response?
"Well, if we are going to get married we will need a bigger house. Mine is too small."

That was his big proposal.
We found a house right away and his sold in three days, so we were married two months later.
The night before our wedding he looked at me and said "I never really proposed so, will you marry me?"

He's no the mst romantic but I love him to death!

Becky ... I like to think of it not as "older" but just "seasoned." :-)

My husband and I grew up in the same church, knew each other since young chaps, but were just friends during church youth and high school. We started dating between his junior and senior year in college. The proposal came two years later on Christmas Eve, when after the church Christmas Eve service he gave me a Christmas stocking. I had hoped he would pop the question soon, but was disappointed a bit when I saw the stocking and thought to myself "well, guess not yet." The ring was at the bottom of the stocking under some small gifts of some sort.

He is a great husband, and I feel blessed that God put him in my life as much more than just a friend.

Mark and I had been dating a while. Come Chrsitmas he had decked out a beautiful tree with all the trimings. I spied a box that was just the right size for a ring and was beyond excited at the tought of Marrying my Knight in Shining armor. Can you even imagine my heart broke when I opened the box and it was a watch. I was crushed but tried not to show it. I wanted to be greatful.

I just figured maybe later, its not time. Come Valentines day nothing...well it was then I took matters into my own hands. I bought HIM a ring with a bear. Went to our now favorite place Olive Garden. I gave the bear to our waitress and filled her in on my plan. When dessert came so did the bear and he had no clue what it meant. I asked him to marry me while the whole Olive Garden wait staff watched with baited breath. He was a tiny bit embarrased and said isnt this sopossed to be the other way around. I told him I loved him and didnt want to wait anymore. He said yes the whole place errupted in cheers.

Teriamisu is our romantic dessert (we feed each other bites). we were married 3 months later we were married on his Dad's birthday who passed away earlier. Our last surprise baby was born on our 9th annaverssary 21 months ago.

My proposal story: Jim asked me to marry him in front of the castle at Disneyland. It was the 50th Anniversary year of Mickey and Minnie, and he said to me "Mickey and Minnie have made it 50 years together, could we try making it 50 years, will you marry me". It went something like that anyway.

If they're getting married this summer... Becky that means you could be a grandma a year(ish) from now. :-D

I don't have my own proposal story, but my parent's engagement story has got to be the least romantic proposal possible. They were sitting on the couch chatting about their future. They were quiet for a while. Dad casually asks mom if she'll marry him.
Silence.
More silence.
Dad gets worried and looks at Mom. She had fallen asleep and slept through the big question.

Jim and I had known each other since I was 12 and he was 16. He was like my older brother. We remained close until College, we reconnected and started hanging out and in Sept started dating. On Oct 7th,1979 while watching TV he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was shocked but said yes so fast he was speachless. God knew what he was doing. we were married in May of 1980 and will celebrate 31 years this May!!! I am a very blessed woman...

Hi Becky --

I laughed when I read your proposal story because much like you and Steve, my husband and I were engaged at night sitting in a car in a grocery store parking lot!!

Thought I'd share my story. Mine actually is a cool one! Tom and I met on e-harmony. We were matched on December 18, 2009. We emailed back and forth for a few weeks and spoke on the phone for the first time on January 11, 2010. From that time on, we spoke every night on the phone for literally hours at a time. He came to visit me in Idaho on February 18, 2010. He proposed on February 19, 2010 (yes, the next day!) I said yes, of course. I just knew he was the one! He left to go back to Bismarck on February 25, 2010 and the next day we chose a date because I couldn't live without him! We were married on May 22, 2010 and I packed all my things and moved the next day!

So, in just 5 months, we were matched, talked on the phone, met in person, got engaged and were married!

Two other points of interest in this story...when I decided to really try e-harmony, I was very hesitant about meeting guys that didn't live near me that had kids. I knew that there was a big chance that I would have to move and I did not want that! I decided that I wanted the guy to move to me...afterall, if we were meant to be, he would do that, right?! Well, I don't know what is was about Tom, but he lived all the way in ND and I was in ID and he had 3 kids and I still gave him a chance...hmmm...was God in this or what?

And the second point of interest is that my parents had moved to Grand Forks, ND 3 years before I got married. I decided not to move with them at that time. I really like Boise and didn't want to move. BUT...3 years later...there I was in ND...with my husband and 3 kids!!

So, yes...e-harmony does work!
